ABOUT

April 2001>
I spent 3 days and nights on the streets of Quebec City to document the scenes surrounding the Summit of the Americas.

The largest domestic security force in Canadian history, was deployed to protect the leaders of every nation within the Western Hemisphere, excluding Cuba.

The purpose of the event, was to negotiate the FTAA (Free Trade Area of the Americas), which would create the largest Free Trade zone in the world.

Over 50 000 activists descended on the city. Some were there to raise awareness for Fair Trade, some were there to push for more transparency from the negotiation process and some were there to disrupt the meetings.

A 4 KM-long fence was erected around the Old City of Quebec. Predictably, this barrier served as a magnet for confrontation between protesters and security forces. The title of my series, REDZONE, comes from the security designation for this area.

...30-foot columns of CS gas rolling through narrow cobbled-stone streets... Helicopters casting their spotlights on flash-points in the crowd... The blanket anonymity of both mask-wearing activists and riot police... All set against the heritage architecture of Quebec City, created a dramatic stage for my images.
